How We Started
While teaching business and marketing classes at NYC’s Science, Industry & Business Library (SIBL) on 5th Ave., I noticed many international students attended my classes and approached me before or after class to timidly ask questions about my class–some seemed like genuine questions while others seemed like a cautious attempt just to speak with a native English speaker. I have been in similar situations so had great empathy for them.
As they became more comfortable and saw I was an enthusiastic and effective teacher, students quickly started to ask me questions about whatever topic they were studying at the time (often for TOEFL).
To accommodate their desire to learn and my need to eat, we began to walk to a nearby cafe in pairs or small groups. Many students were really stressed and overworked with tedious learning lessons and seemed isolated with fear and always had their nose stuck in a book so their English was not improving much.
I was concerned how some students who had been in the US for a fair amount of time still had limited skills. And I was impressed how only a few sessions with me seemed to cause breakthroughs in their learning and comfort with socializing. Why was I able to help!? Why did they seem to not make as much progress at their professional language school!? There are a number of possible reasons such as class size and dynamics, but mostly because I feel I was able to understand the situation of the typical International student, and focused my lessons on practical strategies that would boost their confidence to engage with more real-world social situations.
As a result, I noticed a need for casual, fun lessons that would meet their need to learn while also giving a chance to squeeze in a little fun and socialization–a basic human need. FunEnglishClass.com was born!
It has mostly been me and a few tutors but an emergency family situation has made it necessary to tutor via Skype and seek qualified, independent tutors to help eager students I am not able to accommodate.
